Dementia is a syndrome, especially common in old age, describing a characteristic pattern of symptoms that can result from many different brain diseases. It is not a diagnosis, nor can it be identified neuropathologically or by neuroimaging, nor is it the result of normal aging. Once recognized, it requires further assessment to identify the likely subtype (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, Parkinson’s disease, or frontotemporal dementia). This course will help the healthcare professional to indicate prognosis and guide best therapeutic intervention and management.
