Continuing Education Requirements of The Board of Certification

The National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (BOC) is the national governing body responsible for credentialing Athletic Trainers (AT). To maintain current AT certification, individuals must meet BOC continuing education (CE) requirements. A total of fifty (50) hours of CE is required every two (2) years. Athletic Trainers can earn 50 hours of CE through Category A, or courses provided by BOC Approved Providers. Although CEUs are no longer awarded for emergency cardiac care (ECC) certification, ATs need to be current with the ECC requirements throughout the reporting period.

MASSAGE THERAPISTS

State Requirements

  • 12 hours of CE biennially (Texas Accepts 12 hours of Massage Therapy online courses)
  • (online CE is acceptable only if the subject matter is not massage therapy techniques or manipulation of soft tissue)
  • Human Trafficking for Texas Healthcare Practitioners
  • Health care practitioners who provide direct patient care must complete an approved human trafficking prevention training course in order to renew their license
  • The NCBTMB is not accepting coursework in this topic for CE Credit
  • Renewal licenses will be issued for a two-year period and expire on the last day of the licensee’s birth month.
  • The expiration date is noted on each license.
  • Initial license is valid until the last day of the licensee’s birth month in the following year, as determined by the department, and must be renewed on or before the expiration date.

  • 24 Hours of CE’s

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) is the national governing body responsible for credentialing Massage Therapists. Massage Therapists must renew their board certification every 2 years. During that 2-year period, Massage Therapists are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education. Twenty-one (21) hours of CE must be from Approved Providers and three (3) of the 24 hours must be in Ethics. Candidates must also pass a criminal background check (performed by NCBTMB). There is a limit of 4 hours allowed in self-care coursework.

Occupational Therapist

  • 24 hours of CE due biennially by the end of licensee’s birth month every 2 years based on the date of original license (Texas Accepts 24 hours of online courses)
  • Each continuing education activity may be counted only one time in two renewal cycles or a total of four years

Continuing Education Requirements for Certified Hand Therapists:

The Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC) is the governing body that is responsible for credentialing certified hand therapists (CHT). In order to maintain the CHT credential, a CHT must accumulate a minimum of 80 contact hours of professional development activities during their five-year accrual period. Professional development hours may be earned in seven different categories. OnlineCE.com offers courses in 3 Categories: A, B and C.

Category A – Formal Courses in Upper Extremity Therapy, 3 hours or more in length. All 80 hours can be earned in this category. HTCC Accepts OnlineCE courses.

Category B – Informal Courses in Upper Extremity Therapy, less than 3 hours in length. Maximum accepted: 30 hours per 5-year accrual cycle. HTCC Accepts OnlineCE courses.

Category C – Formal Courses with General Clinical OT or PT content. Maximum accepted: 20 hours per 5-year accrual cycle. HTCC Accepts OnlineCE courses.
