ATHLETIC TRAINERS

State Requirements

  • Must maintain current certification with the BOC that includes completing 50 hours of CE every 2 years

BOC Requirements

  • 50 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Continuing Education Requirements of The Board of Certification

The National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (BOC) is the national governing body responsible for credentialing Athletic Trainers (AT). To maintain current AT certification, individuals must meet BOC continuing education (CE) requirements. A total of fifty (50) hours of CE is required every two (2) years. Athletic Trainers can earn 50 hours of CE through Category A, or courses provided by BOC Approved Providers. Although CEUs are no longer awarded for emergency cardiac care (ECC) certification, ATs need to be current with the ECC requirements throughout the reporting period.

The BOC sets the national standards for certification and through our list of BOC Approved Providers, we offer tools to maintain your continuing education (CE). CE requirements are intended to promote continued competence, development of current knowledge and skills and enhancement of professional skills and judgment. They must focus on increasing knowledge, skills and abilities related to the practice of athletic training. CE programs must also be intended for credentialed health care providers and wellness professionals.

MASSAGE THERAPISTS

State Requirements

  • 24 hours of CE biennially (Virginia Accepts 24 hours of Massage Therapy online courses)
    1 hour of Ethics

NCBTMB Requirements

  • 24 Hours of CE’s
  • 3 CE Hours must be in Ethics – Every two years

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) is the national governing body responsible for credentialing Massage Therapists. Massage Therapists must renew their board certification every 2 years. During that 2-year period, Massage Therapists are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education. Twenty-one (21) hours of CE must be from Approved Providers and three (3) of the 24 hours must be in Ethics. Candidates must also pass a criminal background check (performed by NCBTMB). There is a limit of 4 hours allowed in self-care coursework.

Occupational Therapist

State Requirements

  • 20 hours of CE due biennially on the last day of their birth month every even-numbered year (Virginia Accepts 20 hours of online courses)

Type I vs Type II CE

  • Type 1 hours (at least 10 each biennium) are those activities offered by a sponsor or organization recognized by the profession and may include in-service training, self-study courses, specialty certification or professional workshops. All 20 continued competency hours each biennium may be Type 1 hours. OnlineCE is Type I CE
  • Type 2 hours (no more than 10 each biennium) are those activities, which may include consultation with another therapist, independent reading or research, preparation for a presentation, fieldwork with students, or other such experiences, which promote continued learning
  • Virginia Automatically accepts courses from AOTA Approved Providers

NBCOT Requirements

  • 36 Hours of CE – Every 3 years. The NBCOT accepts 36 hours of OnlineCE courses
  • OnlineCE is an approved provider of the AOTA # 4023

Continuing Education Requirements for Certified Hand Therapists:

The Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC) is the governing body that is responsible for credentialing certified hand therapists (CHT). In order to maintain the CHT credential, a CHT must accumulate a minimum of 80 contact hours of professional development activities during their five-year accrual period. Professional development hours may be earned in seven different categories. OnlineCE.com offers courses in 3 Categories: A, B and C.

Category A – Formal Courses in Upper Extremity Therapy, 3 hours or more in length. All 80 hours can be earned in this category. HTCC Accepts OnlineCE courses.

Category B – Informal Courses in Upper Extremity Therapy, less than 3 hours in length. Maximum accepted: 30 hours per 5-year accrual cycle. HTCC Accepts OnlineCE courses.

Category C – Formal Courses with General Clinical OT or PT content. Maximum accepted: 20 hours per 5-year accrual cycle. HTCC Accepts OnlineCE courses.

Physical Therapist

  • 30 hours of CE biennially (Virginia Accepts 30 hours of online courses)
  • A minimum of 15 of the hours required for physical therapists shall be in Type 1 courses.
  • OnlineCE courses are considered Type I CE as they provided by TX PT CE Approved Provider
  • PT licenses expire on December 31st of each even numbered year
